Review

On April 8, 1945, World War II ended in the European Theatre. In the book Together Again by Marion Kummerow, the Klausen women all are waiting for the men in the family to return.Fraulein Klausen, the girls’ mother (Mutter), is waiting for her husband and the family’s father Georg who was a POW in the Soviet Union. All three daughters are waiting for the men in their lives. Ursula and her daughter Evie are staying with Aunt Lydia on her farm in the Bavaria area of Germany. Ursula is waiting for Tom Westlake an RAF pilot she had rescued and risked her life to get him back to the British area.Anna is a nurse in Berlin. Will her boss and mentor Professor Scherer be able to persuade the Soviets to help return Peter? Lotte who was in Norway working for the Germans (but spying for Britain) has to have a way back to Germany. She is waiting for Johann to return. He is a POW of the Soviet Union. Will the Klausen family finally all be reunited again? The storyline of the book includes the Klausen family after the ending of World War II and some of the issues and challenges of that period. Now the allies are left with the daunting task of reuniting and rebuilding. All across Europe, there is waste and want. Berlin is now a divided city of four sections governed by France, Britain, America, and the Soviet Union. Berlin was heavily bombed by the Allies leaving the city in almost total ruin and ruble with many buildings not standing or not inhabitable. Where are the people to live as they return home? Much of the infrastructure is gone. There is not any electricity, running water, phone service, or mail delivery. Transportation is lacking with the roads and bridges destroyed in many places. Trains, buses, and planes and airports are also not running or certainly not running as prior to the war. There are few shops open as the goods and raw materials are not available to the shops which force the shops to remain closed. The food supply is quite low in Berlin as it is all across Europe. Also, worry for the next winter coming, will coal be available for heating? So many of these things we all take for granted on a daily basis took many months and even years to finally put back together. This was a very interesting and informative book. I was rooting for all the Klausen family to finally be reunited. I was also impressed with all the information that was supplied explaining the struggle and persistence that it would have taken to just put Berlin itself back together let alone all of Europe!!! I highly recommend this excellent book. It was a definite page turner. I could hardly put it down. Each and every book in Marion’s War Girl Series has been a super read. I will and I know others too will be sad when this series is completed!!!
