His wife split, his gambling debts spiraled, and his fellow officers ostracized him.Drowning his sorrows at a local watering hole, Reece meets Queenie, a woman too good to be true. He could tell her anything, perhaps too much. On his way home, Reece stumbles upon a John Doe sucked dry of blood and becomes the prime suspect. As Reece investigates on his own to clear his name, he encounters bikers from the Legion of the Lamb, a clandestine group of monster hunters looking into the same case. Reece teams up with the Legion and uncovers the startling truth about Modesto's vampires. When the bloodsuckers capture Queenie, it's up to Reece and the Legion to save her before the Regens Noctis - the true ruler of the night - plunges the city into an orgy of blood. Read more

Review

This book has a lot of stuff to enjoy: horror, vampires, comedy, romance, action, and mystery. Reece is a man of many mistakes, but he genuinely tries to do the right thing even if he sometimes displays a comedic level of lack of self-awareness. The absolute king of saying the absolute wrong thing at the wrong time. His personality gave the book a cheesy 80s horror comedy feel, which I absolutely loved about it and hope was intentional. Reece grows on you even if he does some seriously cringy thing. In short, he stumbles across a dead body while seeking answers to the supposed suicide of a friend, which sucks him into a world of paranormal danger he is not ready for. But at least he has a hot girlfriend. He has a lot of demons and insecurities, and he fully believes at first in the importance of his job as a cop to protect and serve. An ideal he becomes disillusioned with as he realizes the institution is corrupt. Good thing he has a whole new pack of monster-slaying motorcycle gang friends. The final battle at Bat Hollow was fun-- gorey, creative, and fast-paced. Really, it was like watching an 80s USA Up All Night movie without your parents catching you. I had tons of with this one because of the humor.
