Determined to uncover the truth that a powerful organization wants to keep hidden, Bern will stop at nothing to right history's wrongs and give Josephine the recognition she deserves.“A maestro of musical mystery...Slocumb’s writing is invigorating, and the detail in his character work makes the main characters in both time periods easy to root for.... Thrilling.”—The New York Times"At once a celebration of music and also a cautionary tale about legacy, privilege, and creative genius."—Nita Prose, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The MaidBern Hendricks has just received the call of a lifetime. Review

4.5 rounded up to 5 stars. (Updating with full review).Characters:Brendan Slocumb puts on a master class of how to write realistic characters in Symphony of Secrets. These characters were so realistic that I thought for sure Frederick Delaney and Josephine Reed existed and went to look up other books to read about them - they are both fictional. Which just absolutely blew my mind.Slocumb's characters are so realistic, emotional, vibrant and full of life. I need more characters like these.Josephine Reed is not only my favorite character in this novel (by far), but my favorite character that Slocumb has given us so far. I would read - and need - an entire book just on Josephine. (If you could get on that, Mr. Slocumb, that would be great.)musical components:Slocumb wrote the musical components in the book so well that I didn't need any background in music whatsoever to understand what was happening and the importance of it all here. Speaking (or writing) of the music - I NEED this Olympic Opera in my life. (So Mr. Slocumb, if you could get on that too - that would be fantastic. Thanks.)why 4.5 and not 5 stars:Dual timelines is always a hard thing for me to read and fully enjoy and appreciate. I enjoyed the present timeline and absolutely loved - was taken away and enraptured by - the 1920s timeline. However the two working together felt like it was lacking something (really) small to pull them together. I wanted something else to happen at the end to bring it all together - I'm not 100% entirely sure what that is that I wanted, just something. Which is partly why the ending felt just a little flat to me.The other reason why it felt flat was because there was a certain choice made for two of the characters at the end, and I won't say what to save spoilers, but it felt a bit predictable and I was almost disappointed that it did happen. I saw it coming and wished it didn't happen.Overall though, this book was amazing. I need more characters from Brendan Slocumb. Highly recommend if you love musical mysteries.
