Desciption

Rival photographers are forced to collaborate on a body-positive lingerie campaign, but they might have to readjust their focus when sparks fly.Photographer Cassie Harris loves her job - her company Buxom Boudoir makes people look beautiful and feel empowered with her modern twist on classic pinup photography. Cassie’s best friend, Dana, is about to launch her own dangerously dreamy lingerie line and wants Cassie to shoot and direct the career-changing national campaign. But company politics and Dana’s complicated pregnancy interfere, and Cassie finds herself - a proud plus-size Black woman - not behind the camera but in front of it.Though she’s never modeled herself, Cassie’s pretty sure she can handle the sheer underwear and caution tape bralettes. She’s not sure she can work so intimately with the chosen photographer, her longtime competitor in the Chicago photography scene, Reid Montgomery. Their chemistry is undeniable on set, however, and feelings can develop faster than film.... Read more

Review

I know someone who specializes in boudoir photography, so I couldn’t help but find The Accidental Pinup fascinating. It’s hard to fathom how much work goes into it, and it was perfectly explained when we learned about Cassie and her budding business. Personally, I’m not into photography, yet the way Cassie describes it and the passion she exhibits made me feel passionate about it, too. It also helped to make the reader better understand the contrasting feelings she has for Reid, a man who always seems to be just one or two steps ahead of her when it comes to scoring jobs in the industry.I appreciated the focus on women and empowering them to feel beautiful, no matter their size. It was a major focal point, particularly with Cassie and her business and her best friend Dana and her lingerie line, with clothing made to fit every woman. When Dana can’t commit to a campaign she’s signed up for that will promote her lingerie line, she encourages Cassie to step in for her, forcing Cassie to work closely–maybe a little too closely–with Reid.I loved the push and pull between Cassie and Reid. One minute they’re either aloof or can’t seem to tolerate one another, but then they’re finding themselves standing under a makeshift mistletoe, kissing. Cassie is finding it hard to keep him at arm’s length, while Reid struggles with secrets that could potentially damage any sort of trust that Cassie has placed in him. I had a pretty good idea how things would play out in the end, but it was enjoyable and at times, pretty spicy.
