This book takes me back to the first time I read about Ank-Morpork; or magic in the Wizard of Earthsea. Siobhan is one of the best protagonists in fiction: clever, driven, but also a little oblivious, with secrets, and an outsider’s perspective. The book plays on themes from fairy tales, fantasy fiction, myth, with heavy handed reimagining of the same old stories, so it feels both new and familiar.Reading this feels that around any corner, a sorcerer could be preparing a beautiful illusion, or contacting another plane of existence. A shadow might find a pixie, or a monster. Honest coppers wander the streets of this world looking to catch the protagonist, while nobility schemes among themselves. An ivory tower on a hill (the university) looks out on all the people below and hands out degrees with a miserly hand.All handled without any tedium, and containing both humor and action.
