Blockly is a web based Google computer programming editor that requires only enough typing to rename variables and input desired text. It uses a system of puzzle like blocks to create programming instructions. The male and female puzzle shapes restrict the assembly to workable programming lines.Google apparently designed Blockly for a worldwide audience of fourth and fifth grade students. It appears to believe that children who start that young have a better chance to become gifted programmers than students who start at age 15 or later.This Kindle book is designed for teachers and parents of elementary children who are looking for an easy way to learn and be able to teach programming. If the child these parents and teachers want to teach is already mathematically gifted, he or she might begin to learn some aspects of Blockly much earlier than Google expects, perhaps as early as first grade.Blockly currently runs only on desktop and laptop computers with internet access and using Safari, Chrome, or Firefox. Access Blockly by doing a Google search for “Blockly : Code.”Anyone who is comfortable programming in any language should not buy this book unless he/she wants access to the included 41 age appropriate programming problems. Experienced programmers who experiment with Blockly will already be familiar with all of the blocks and their uses.Also, anyone who is easily frustrated when the illustrations in an eBook do not exactly match the material they are encountering as they experiment should avoid this eBook. Blockly is still under development. Its developers have made so many cosmetic changes to their blocks while this eBook was being written that trying to change the illustrations to match the new cosmetics was deemed futile.Programming is programming. While Blockly developers can and will continue to make cosmetic changes, the fundamental use of any cosmetically altered block does not change.Finally, yes we know the program on the cover could have been written with fewer lines and fewer variables, but it would have been less understandable to someone without programming knowledge.
